چکیده

[1] Previous studies have shown (1) that the Tibetan Plateau produces a significant fraction of the two components of the Equatorial Mountain Torque (EMT) in winter, (2) that these torques are in part related to the East Asian cold surges, and (3) that the cold surges affect the convection over the maritime continent. We show here that these relations are strong enough for the convection over the Equatorial South China Sea to be associated with significant signals on the two components of the EMT that can precede by a few days and more the convection. These signals are associated to surface pressure and temperature patterns that are strongly reminiscent of the East Asian cold surges. Our results therefore show that the Tibetan Plateau couple dynamically the midlatitudes and the tropical region, and that the vectors of this dynamical coupling are the cold surges. This coupling also influences the convection over the northern Bay of Bengal, mainland southeast Asia, and Indonesia. Citation: Mailler, S., and F. The Role of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau within the Asian Monsoon System

JULY 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he key mission of the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) is to understand water and energy cycles, document their physical processes, and simulate and predict water and energy fluxes. This involves a synergetic strategy integrating satellite data, in situ observations, assimilated data, and modeling simulations. A CEOP Monsoon Systems Work...

Narrow Mountains of Asia Shape Monsoon Circulation

Imagine a world without mountains! Temperature, wind and rainfall patterns would differ greatly from what we know. In Asia, the very high Tibetan Plateau exerts a strong influence on climate. Heated directly by intense solar radiation during summertime, the temperatures in June– August form a regional maximum. Lhasa at 3.65 km above sea level, for example, has an average comfortable 15°C during...

Monitoring and Modeling the Tibetan Plateau’s climate system and its impact on East Asia

The Tibetan Plateau is an important water source in Asia. As the "Third Pole" of the Earth, the Tibetan Plateau has significant dynamic and thermal effects on East Asian climate patterns, the Asian monsoon process and atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. However, little systematic knowledge is available regarding the changing climate system of the Tibetan Plateau and the mechanis...

The Deep Atmospheric Boundary Layer and Its Significance to the Stratosphere and Troposphere Exchange over the Tibetan Plateau

In this study the depth of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over the Tibetan Plateau was measured during a regional radiosonde observation campaign in 2008 and found to be deeper than indicated by previously measurements. Results indicate that during fair weather conditions on winter days, the top of the mixed layers can be up to 5 km above the ground (9.4 km above sea level). Measurements ...

Evaluation of the performance of the CMIP5 General Circulation Models in predicting the Indian Ocean Monsoon precipitation over south Sistan and Baluchestan, using the past hydrological changes in the region

1-Introduction Climate change refers to any significant change in the existing mean climatic conditions within a certain time period (Jana and Majumder, 2010; Giorgi, 2006). Earth's climate change through history has happened (Nakicenovic et al., 2000; Bytnerowicz et al., 2007). 2-Materials and methods In this study, daily precipitation and daily maximum (Tmax) and daily minimum (Tmin) tempera...
